課程概述

The course covers English literary works within the time frame of seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The lecture will focus on a selection of texts by various authors, ranging from John Donne to Samuel Johnson, and including female writers such as Margaret Cavendish. A brief introduction to the context of each historical period and text will also be available. This is followed by guided reading of the selected texts and discussions on relevant issues. A selection of audio-visual and digital resources will also be introduced throughout the curriculum in order to support students' learning process. 

課程目標
It is hoped that, after taking this class, students will not only gain a clear overview of both the literature and the cultural/historical/social background of the period, but also enjoy reading seventeenth- and eighteenth-century English literature.
 
課程要求
(1)Students are required to preview the texts before class so as to participate in classroom discussions. (2) Attendance: Students who are absent (i.e. no-show without advanced notices to the instructor) for more than 10 hours in this semester will will be flunked (max. 59 points). Students who are present in all classes get ONE extra points, which will be added to their final scores. (3) Assignments submitted up to one week late of the deadline will have 10 points deducted, unless the student is in extreme conditions (such as illness, accidents, financial and family issues, etc.) and obtains the instructor’s consent in advance. Late submission for more than two weeks will NOT be marked.
